The books the group read can have an explicitly Christian theme or purpose but we are by no means restricted to these. Any book members feel might be worth reading and give us something to think about and discuss can be chosen. Meetings take place at the Church on weekday evenings and last no more than an hour and a half. We usually end with a friendly coffee. We generally also let people know what we have been reading through the Church Journal - and also what we thought of the latest offering! We have been reading-
The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini
A most gripping "can't put down" story of Afghanistan in the 1970's, with all its socio-politcal difficulties. It is a highly charged first novel about two young Afghan boys - one a rich privileged boy with severe confidence problems - the other his low caste servant boy, but his loyal friend at the same time. Through evil divisive times, both political and personal these two eventually work out their salvation through their inherited kite running skills.
"one of my favourite books this year" - Glenis - (and we all agree with her!) This novel certainly brought its author centre-stage in the literary world. Like thousands of readers we eagerly awaited his next:-A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini
Another very moving story set in Afghanistan between the 1970s and the 1990s, this time about two women living through the end of Russian control through the Taliban rule - with endless gunfire, bombs, unbelievable hardship and suffering The two women struggle through all this with added personal incredible misery having to share a mean hard brutal husband. This does not sound like a very happy read we realise - but it is all so beautifully told. We may be the sadder at the end, but very much wiser with an understanding of and feeling for the Afghan women's suffering and admiration for their courage.
All critics agree that Khaled Hosseini is a number one storyteller. We eagerly await No 3!
