Retreat to Lindisfarne
Lindisfarne Castle across the bay viewed from the churchyard
One of the many things Holy Island in October has to
offer its visitors is a variety of weather conditions. While we were there we experienced sleety snow, rain, wind, sunshine, calm, rainbows, cloudy skies & clear skies. Oh, and everything else you care to think of. Fortunately we were able to do what we wanted when the weather best suited our needs.
I couldn't resist this, it was a picture begging to be taken. My friends David & Trish were totally unaware that I had them 'in my sights', neither did they know that they were leaving a perfect trail of footprints behind them which appear to come together in the middle foreground of the picture. Very romantic!
Sunset over St. Cuthbert's Island, which can actually be reached on foot at low tide It was here that Cuthbert spent much of his time as a hermit, devoting his whole existence to God. (He must have been a hardy soul because it was pretty bleak when we were there!) You can just make out the cross in the middle of the island
Making our way across the 'Pilgrim's Way', the original route to the island, and the original means of getting there, before the causeway was built (which you can now drive across - well, when the tides out that is!) It looks fairly easy going which it was just here, but a bit further into the walk it became very, very, muddy Obviously no one laughed! I came away from my brief spell on Lindisfarne feeling very refreshed and look forward to returning some day |
